                                  Kohlendreieckbrücke

The Letzigraben (1156 m) and Kohlendreieckbrücke (394 m) are bridge structures built as part of the so-called Altstetten-Zurich HB-Oerlikon (DML) cross-city line. Together they form the exit from the new underground railway station Löwenstrasse heading west.

Construction work began in 2008 with the "reallocation" of track sections in Zurich's main station. From 2009, the first of a total of 23 piers were built. The piers, which are a maximum of 16 metres high, are based on bored piles up to 45 metres long. The superstructure was built using a pusher frame, which was assembled in autumn 2011. A structural defect required the installation of a slab track from November 2013. This was necessary because six to eight tension cables had to be pulled in across the track above each of the 23 piers and fixed on the outside with anchor heads. The tension cables resting on the bridge trough had to be concreted in, which meant that a conventional ballasted track could no longer be installed due to the lack of space. Therefore, for the first time in Switzerland, a ballastless track of the LVT system was installed on a bridge.

SBB commissioned Rubi Bahntechnik for this project change in the mandate "Permanent way management and specialist for slab track". The big challenge was to find a technically feasible solution and to have it approved by the FOT. Furthermore, Rubi Bahntechnik was allowed to carry out the tendering of the work and to closely accompany the work as permanent way manager. Despite the project change, the bridges could start operation at the end of 2016.
